What does it mean to be an "active" member?
Membership is automatically bestowed on those who have attended or graduated from (LS)UNO. Active membership status applies to those members who have paid the annual Alumni Association membership dues. Individual membership is $50 per year. Active membership status is required to receive alumni benefits and to serve on the alumni board.
Why should I participate in Alumni Association activities?
Affiliation with the Alumni Association provides a lifelong connection to the University of New Orleans. Joining provides opportunities to mix, mingle and network with old friends and new acquaintances. The social aspect of membership can be very rewarding. Through our publications, you can be kept informed about issues and events relating to the University.
What if someone did not graduate from UNO?
We encourage all former students, whether they have graduated or not, to become active members of the Alumni Association.
I am a member, but my spouse has never attended UNO.Can she/he join anyway?
We welcome anyone who expresses an interest in the University of New Orleans. While the majority of our membership consists of UNO alumni, we have several members who have "adopted" UNO and support it as their own.
If there is more than one Alumni Association member in my family,do we get a discount?
Individual membership is $50 per year, and family membership is $75 per year.
What types of projects do my alumni dues support?
Alumni dues are separate from the UNO Annual Fund. Alumni membership dues are used to cover the operating expenses of the Alumni Association. These funds are also used to recruit new members, grow and maintain chapters, and provide student scholarships and staff recognition. A strong and active Alumni Association aids in student recruitment and helps to strengthen the University.
What sort of discounts do active alumni members receive?
Active UNO alumni receive discounts on the following: UNO Bookstore insignia merchandise, Health and Recreation Center membership, Music Department concerts, Drama Department productions and Intercollegiate Athletics events. Discounts also are available on various campus facility rentals, such as the University Center and the Homer L. Hitt Alumni and Visitors Center. Additionally, the Earl K. Long Library extends borrowing privileges to active alumni.
Does UNO host class reunions?
Because most students customize their academic pace to fit their unique needs, we find reunions based on class year are not effective at UNO. Our students often form friendships based on other criteria, such as major or participation in extra-curricular activities. If you and your associates would like to have a smaller reunion based upon some other criteria, the alumni staff would be happy to assist you.
The Alumni Association hosts an annual Alumni Reunion Brunch. Colleges sometimes host their own functions or sponsor alumni chapters for their graduates.
Someone called my house the other day and asked if I’d like to contribute to the UNO Annual Fund. What is that?
That someone was most likely a UNO student. Several current students participate in the annual fund campaign and call alumni on the University's behalf. The University of New Orleans is Louisiana’s second-largest university, yet received only 28% of its funding from the State in 2002-03. For the rest, UNO relies on tuition, federal funding, alumni, friends, corporations and foundations. When you make a gift to the annual fund, you help UNO to remain a force for progressive development locally, regionally, and nationally. When you give $250 or more, you may designate the college to which you would like your gift to be directed. A donation form is enclosed, however, if you have a question or would like more information about the UNO Annual Fund, call Kurt Overton, Director of Annual Giving, at 504-280-7338.
