UNO International Alumni Association History

Homer L. Hitt BustThe University’s Alumni Association was established in 1961 by members of the first senior class. Founders included Nolan J. Guillot, Jr. (SC 62), George Sutton (LA 63) and Joe E. Walker (LA 62). Joe Walker served as the first president.

With a true grassroots beginning, the group’s initial activity focused on providing political support for the fledgling University. Leaders met often to hand address all correspondence. Their efforts have laid a strong foundation upon which future graduates can build.

Today, the Alumni Association is organized to serve our alumni, promote fellowship among alumni, and foster loyalty and support for the University. It is governed by Articles of Incorporation and a set of By-Laws which have been amended several times over the years, most recently in 2000. As required by the By-Laws, the Alumni Association is guided by a 37-member Board of Directors, which is made up of both appointed and elected positions.

Board Application Forms are mailed to all active members in January of each year. You are invited to apply, and we encourage your participation. The Board of Directors meets quarterly and holds an Annual Meeting, usually in May. If you would like more information about becoming involved, come visit us at the Homer L. Hitt Alumni and Visitors Center (just look for the smokestack), or e-mail Monique Gaudin Gardner.
